We Need Fewer Statistics and More Gun Detection

From just one active shooter incident in 2000, the number of mass shootings has exploded in recent years. According to the FBI, from 2000 to 2006 there was an annual average of 6.4 incidents, but from 2007 to 2013, the average rose to 16.4 cases. And it has continued to rise, with 40 cases in 2014-2015 and 50 cases in 2016-2017. This must stop. At ZeroEyes, we are committed to doing our part to prevent this increase in shooting events with advanced, state-of-the-art gun detection. Our objective? Stop them before they start shooting.  An active shooter incident is defined as an individual actively killing or attempting to kill in populated areas, excluding gang and drug violence. The federally-agreed-upon definition of active shooting “inherently implies that both law enforcement personnel and citizens have the potential to affect the outcome of the event based upon their responses,” the FBI study claims. However, that is not what we are seeing in the statistics. Between 2000 and 2013, 160 active shooting incidents took place in the U.S.: 45.6% in commercial settings (businesses and malls), 24.4% in K-12 schools and universities, 10% in governmental settings, 9.4% in open spaces, and the remaining in healthcare facilities, houses of worship, and homes.  Most of these locations, with the exception of open spaces and homes, should have well-defined security systems that include security cameras, methods to target-harden the location to make it unattractive to attackers, and an advanced gun detection system like ZeroEyes.  ZeroEyes uses state-of-the-art artificial intelligence technology to immediately detect visible guns and send real-time alerts instantly to security personnel and administrators so they can take immediate action to prevent an attack. What’s more, we use a self-learning algorithm to constantly enhance our technology based on the most up-to-date information available about active shooters and firearms. This ongoing machine learning is directed by our staff, highly-trained former American military personnel who understand not only weaponry but the critical importance of supplying real-time information to security forces so they can complete their mission to defend and protect.  Statistics indicate that 60% of active shootings end before police arrive on the scene. The ZeroEyes built-in alert system connected to local 911 and other first responders works to get security on the spot before the shooting begins or as quickly as possible, to neutralize the threat before many people are hurt.  Organizations have their own part to play in decreasing the attacks and casualties, as the FBI report implies, through training and prevention. The FBI study showed that most shooters demonstrate concerning signs in the weeks and months before the incident, and they also take time to plot and prepare. Proper training in looking for warning signs, along with training on how to respond safely when an incident takes place, can help decrease the risk of a mass shooter incident at your location.  By combining these steps with a robust security system equipped with ZeroEyes gun detection, your chance of experiencing a mass shooting at your location is dramatically reduced. Together, we can reverse the steady incline of active shooting events in the United States.

Keeping Your Commercial Property Safe

The best defense is a strong offense. From 2000 to 2013, nearly half of all mass shootings took place in commercial settings. If those commercial settings had had a thorough security strategy in place, including sufficient security resource officers (SRO), staff and tenants trained in safety protocols, evacuation plans, and appropriate technology and physical barriers to target-harden the premises and deter potential threats, there is reason to believe that the shootings may not have taken place.  Research indicates that shooters plan their shooting sprees for weeks or even months before they attack. They look for vulnerable targets – those with insufficient security cameras, unsecured entry points, lots of hiding places, vulnerable people, and basically no one to stop them. Eliminate those weaknesses in your commercial property and you’ve dramatically decreased your likelihood of being targeted. Active shooters need to know they won’t get away with a shooting. That’s why it’s important to have visible security cameras equipped with a gun detection system, with clearly placed signs announcing this to any would-be attackers. Unless there is a strong motivation for a shooter to choose your location, for instance, as an act of revenge, the would-be assailant will most likely be deterred. But you need to be prepared anyway. With ZeroEyes gun detection, as soon as our system detects a visible gun, your administrators, on-site SROs, and local first responders will receive immediate alerts. This allows you to instantly put into practice the other aspects of your security strategy: locking down entrances to stores or offices and moving your people to secure, safe locations.  As a potential shooter walks through your office building, strip mall, stadium, or other public location and is picked up by your security cameras, law enforcement and administrators receive constant updates of the perpetrator’s movements, so you and the police are always one step ahead of him.  In addition to our state-of-the-art gun detection software enhanced with artificial intelligence, ZeroEyes clients have the support of our staff of former U.S. military with enhanced weapons knowledge and training in combat situations, who work with law enforcement during an active shooter scenario to neutralize the threat within minutes.  If you have not yet done a security vulnerability assessment to determine where your weaknesses lie, don’t wait. You must institute the appropriate protocols, target-harden your physical location, provide the appropriate amount of on-site SROs and security cameras, and enhance your cameras with ZeroEyes gun detection. ZeroEyes is your “force multiplier.” It multiplies your security personnel by deterring shooters by its very presence, but also by ensuring the fastest possible response time from first responders and SROs in the event of a shooting, along with the knowledge and expertise of our best-of-the-best American military working with you to keep your location secure.

Do Gun-Free Zones Make Us Safer?

According to a study from the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), 89% of mass shootings between 1988 and 2019 occurred in gun-free zones. This evidence seems to suggest that gun-free zones just don’t work to keep people safe.  Why would that be? Simple. Because shooters look for easy targets. Most shooters don’t act on impulse. According to the FBI’s Study of Pre-Attack Behaviors of Active Shooters in the United States between 2000-2013, 88% of mass shootings are planned – it’s essentially premeditated murder. And in their planning, these bad actors look for easy targets where they can do maximum damage in the least amount of time.  When you put out a big sign that says “Gun-Free Zone,” this tells potential shooters that there will be no one in the area to stop them from killing as many people as they want. They know there will be no resistance.  What Really Deters Shooters? Public places, schools, office buildings, and houses of worship have a duty to provide a safe environment to the extent that they are able. Just putting up signs is not sufficient. Bad actors bent on committing murder and mayhem are deterred by conditions that make it difficult for them to move about freely shooting and by the presence of individuals or technology that will quickly stop them.  Target-harden your physical spaces. This may mean something very different for different locations, but in general, it means not having easy hiding places outside or inside your location, keeping all entrance and exit points locked or monitored, and having a well-positioned security camera system. Other ways to target-harden your location can be determined by doing a safety assessment with the help of local law enforcement.  Use gun-detection technology. Signage that tells would-be perpetrators that you have technology in force that can detect visible guns clearly deters bad actors. ZeroEyes is driven by powerful artificial intelligence software that immediately detects visible firearms – with no false positives – and instantly informs onsite security and local first responders, so any attempted shootings can be quickly neutralized. Minutes count when saving lives. Our powerful ZeroEyes weapons-detection and instant communication system is operated by trained and combat-hardened American military who know the importance of quick action and real-time intel to accomplish the mission, which is keeping your people safe.  On-site security. When you have visible security on campus, shooters will likely choose another target. If a shooter does choose a location that has security, it may be because there are insufficient personnel to cover the size of the location or because the person is highly motivated to use that location, possibly due to a desire for revenge against persons there. In the event of a shooter situation, ZeroEyes provides on-site security guards and first responders constant updates on the movement of the shooter through the area. This not only helps law enforcement track down and stop the shooter, it gives administrators the information they need to move people to safety and lock down various areas of the building. In short, declaring your building or campus a gun-free zone essentially makes your location a target. Instead, focus on target-hardening your location, adding and announcing a gun-detection software like ZeroEyes, and providing visible security so that the bad actor decides your location is just not worth the risk.

How Our Specialization in Gun Detection Keeps Your People Safer

At ZeroEyes, we have chosen to focus our expertise on providing the most state-of-the-art gun detection technology rather than spreading ourselves thin by loading on additional services that may sound good but may be substandard because of the divided attention. There are other security services on the market that have added features that are hot topics right now – temperature checks and face-mask compliance for COVID-19, metal detectors, aggressive behaviors, identity detection, and more. While this sounds attractive, there is an old saying: “jack of all trades but master of none.” We have chosen to be masters in the field of accurate, rapid, effective gun detection. As US military veterans (special ops), we know the importance of having critical situational awareness and real-time intel in a combat situation – and an active shooter scenario is a combat situation. Our specialization in gun detection technology has given us the critical focus we need to develop the most innovative, proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) platform, including machine-learning algorithms to constantly evolve into an ever-stronger and more effective weapon against gun violence. With this expertise, we have created a 21st-century “Digital Fire Alarm” that instantly warns organization leaders and first responders within 3-5 seconds of detecting firearms. Some add-on services risk false positives – a metal detector can misclassify a harmless item as a gun, aggressive behavior sensors can misread a person’s behavior – and these false positives can lead to arresting or injuring innocent people. Other add-ons, such as identity detection and the COVID systems, are being challenged for an invasion of privacy and could lead to lawsuits. Our ZeroEyes gun detection system has no false positives. When a gun is detected, you will know immediately, and so will law enforcement. Seconds count in active shooter scenarios; instant feedback will give you the chance to lock out or lock down the intruder and will significantly reduce response time, saving lives. Furthermore, ZeroEyes was recently certified RapidSOS Ready, allowing critical data and active threats to be sent directly to 911 dispatchers, speeding response time and improving real-time intel even more. At ZeroEyes, we are constantly improving what we do best – gun detection. This is the value of specialization. Shots Are Fired; But Where’s the Shooter?

In an active shooter situation, seconds count. The sooner law enforcement arrives on the scene and finds the shooter, the fewer lives are endangered. But this can be a real challenge with standard security systems and response tactics.  ZeroEyes AI gun detection dramatically cuts response time and provides first responders with the critical intel they need to stop threat actors. The moment a gun is visible, even before shots are fired, ZeroEyes, attached to your security cameras, will send a message to the critical people whom you choose to alert – your administrators, security personnel on location, and the law enforcement dispatch in your area. This allows you to immediately set into play your active shooter protocols and protect your people. Unique to the ZeroEyes system is our team of former military special ops and other security personnel who provide personal, human surveillance of your system 24/7. When a threat is detected and our system sends the alert, our team of military veterans go into action, coordinating the distribution of mission-critical information in real time, so that the forces on the ground can respond immediately and decisively to neutralize the threat. Real-time updates as the shooter moves through the facility give first responders the military-level intelligence they need to find the shooter quickly. These alerts also allow administrators time to lock down the building or the wing in order to trap the shooter in a given area and prevent further movement. Because all shooters are different, ZeroEyes is equipped with machine-learning algorithms to constantly evolve into a stronger and more effective weapon against gun violence. ZeroEyes removes the potential for human error; a security guard who is distracted from the screen for even a moment may miss early detection, but ZeroEyes is always on watch. Schools and universities, stadiums, theme parks, museums, airports, corporate campuses, hospitals, office buildings – wherever people congregate, there is potential for a live shooter scenario. People deserve to feel safe. You can upgrade your security significantly and increase the safety of your premises dramatically by adding ZeroEyes Gun Detection System to your existing security cameras. Call us today to find out how we can help you target-harden your facilities.

Using Your Existing Security Cameras in Weapons Detection

Mass shootings are occurring with alarming frequency in our country, but up until now, on-site security and first responders have not had the intel they needed to respond quickly enough to save lives when seconds matter.  Without real-time situational awareness during an active-shooter incident, first responders must take time after they arrive to gather accurate information and develop a better understanding of the situation before they can take action to stop the threat. But by that time, more lives may have been needlessly lost. With the ZeroEyes weapons detection platform enhancing your existing security camera system, on-site security personnel and emergency responders know immediately who the threat actors are, where they are, and what they are doing, providing security forces with the tactical intelligence they need to engage the threat quickly and effectively.  Cameras can be a powerful tool to help secure the safety of schools, businesses, offices, and public locations. ZeroEyes technology is integrated into your existing security camera system, using an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm to provide real-time weapons detection.  The AI algorithm in the ZeroEyes platform is constantly scanning the camera frames for guns and is able to identify a wide variety of weapons. When a weapon is detected, an alert is immediately sent through the ZeroEyes monitoring platform and mobile app with an image of the shooter and the shooter’s location to everyone the system has been programmed to contact. ZeroEyes has an industry-leading low false-positive rate, which means that when that alarm goes off, you know it’s not an accident. You also know exactly where the threat is so that you can take immediate action to protect your people and move them out of harm’s way.  As perpetrators walk through the facility, cameras pick up their location and provide real-time location tracking, suspect descriptions, and valuable situational awareness to increase security force reaction time and give them the information they need to quickly eliminate the threat.  ZeroEyes is founded and directed by US military veterans with deep experience in Special Ops and Military Intelligence, including Navy SEALs and Navy Intelligence Officers. We have been trained and have fought to save lives. It is our mission to continue that commitment of service by providing the nation’s leading weapons-detection solution for the ultimate protection of your school, institution, or company.  As soldiers, we had at our disposal the most state-of-the-art, military-grade technology to provide us with the situational intel we needed to get in, get the job done, and get out. We believe civilian security forces and first responders should also have the best technology to equip them to save lives. Contact us here at ZeroEyes about your particular needs to see how we can help you protect your patrons, your staff, and your students.
