Mason County Central School District Expands ZeroEyes Deployment Following Early Success

Aug 12, 2025

ZeroEyes, the creators of the first AI-based gun detection video analytics platform to earn the full U.S. Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act Designation, today announced that Michigan’s Mason County Central School District (MCCSD) has expanded its deployment of the company’s proactive gun detection and intelligent situational awareness platform. This expansion follows two successful years of collaboration in protecting staff and students from gun-related violence.

Located east of Ludington, MCCSD serves approximately 1,200 students across four schools: Scottville Elementary, Mason County Upper Elementary, Mason County Middle School, and Mason County High School. The district employs over 200 teachers and staff. ZeroEyes was deployed in 2023, supported by increased state funding for school security following the Oxford High School shooting. Encouraged by the technology’s impact, the school board has extended its coverage area.

ZeroEyes’ AI gun detection and intelligent situational awareness software is layered onto MCCSD’s existing digital security cameras. If a gun is identified, images are instantly shared with the ZOC, the industry’s only U.S.-based, fully in-house operation center, which is staffed 24/7/365 by military and law enforcement veterans. If these experts determine that the threat is valid, they dispatch alerts and actionable intelligence — including visual description, gun type, and last known location — to first responders and local staff as quickly as 3 to 5 seconds from detection.

ZeroEyes and MCCSD are hosting a Lunch & Learn session tomorrow, August 13th at 11:00 am at Mason County Central School (300 West Broadway, Scottville, MI). It is open to local schools, law enforcement, and media, and will feature an in-depth safety and security seminar, demonstration, Q&A, food and drinks.

“Cameras may capture events, but they cannot prevent them. Without the right tools, we are forced to react rather than proactively address potential threats,” said Jeff Mount, Superintendent at Mason County Central School District. “School safety is my top priority, and my goal is to provide the confidence that MCCSD can detect potential threats well before they reach us. With ZeroEyes, I know that our students and campus are protected.”

According to Gartner’s Top Trends in K-12 Education for 2025 research, “safety and well-being continue to be key priorities for the sector, impacting almost all aspects — physical, digital, pedagogical, social and emotional — in K-12 education”

“Districts like Mason County Central Schools set the standard, inspiring others to embrace a proactive approach to security,” said Mike Lahiff, CEO and co-founder of ZeroEyes. “Creating a safe learning environment demands a comprehensive, multi-layered strategy, and we are honored to play a vital role in supporting MCCSD’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing safety.”
