Code Silver: The Alarming Surge in Healthcare Gun Violence Attacks
Healthcare facilities are experiencing a concerning rise in Code Silver incidents, which include onsite armed individuals, hostage situations, and active shooters. Here's how one Georgia-based medical group is fighting back to help ensure the safety of its staff, patients, and visitors.
Healthcare Emergency Exit

In healthcare settings, Code Silver situations—defined as incidents involving individuals with weapons, active shooters, or hostage scenarios—are growing increasingly prevalent.

Workplace violence in healthcare is a critical and escalating issue—and a recent Healthcare Dive article shares some startling stats emphasizing a need for swift action in the industry.

The article states that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare workers in 2018 were five times more likely than those in other industries to be physically attacked at work.

Dr. James Phillips, the chief of disaster medicine for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), and chief of disaster and operational medicine at George Washington University, told Healthcare Dive that in ACEP’s annual membership poll this year, 91% of respondents said they or a colleague had been threatened or attacked in the previous year.

A New Solution

We’re honored that Healthcare Dive featured ZeroEyes in the article as a top security solution to help combat the healthcare gun violence crisis.

Joshua Lane, MD

In the article, you’ll learn about ZeroEyes client Lane Dermatology, a four-physician group in Columbus, Georgia—and how, after years of being too close to devastating gun violence incidents in healthcare, co-founder Joshua Lane, MD, decided to do something about it.

Lane, an Air Force flight surgeon with degrees in counterterrorism and homeland security, shared insights on active shooter risks in healthcare settings during a national medical conference this year, reports Healthcare Dive.

“Decrease the [response] time,” Lane stated in his lecture. “The more that shooter is in your office, the more things can happen.”

After the conference, Healthcare Dive says, Lane started looking into early-warning technology, ultimately choosing ZeroEyes.

“As a small business, we are implementing ZeroEyes’ technology because it buys valuable time for survival during such incidents,” Lane said in a statement. “With ZeroEyes, we hope to set a new security standard for healthcare facilities across the country.”

Innovation In Action

ZeroEyes’ AI-powere, human-verified gun detection system identifies brandished firearms in security camera footage and sends immediate alerts to security teams and local law enforcement. This can significantly reduce response times, helping to protect staff and patients in critical moments, when every second counts.

Our proactive, HIPPA-compliant solution works with your existing digital security cameras and focuses solely on object detection—never facial recognition or personally identifiable information.
